Sonoma Coast Releases

Coastal Sonoma is rugged, even extreme. Vineyards here can often see the Ocean on a clear day, and the wonder is always, will the fruit really ripen? While fog fills the air, some of our favorite vineyard sit right at or above the fog line, allowing for an interesting dance that sambas right through the challenges to offer distinctive fruit like you’ll find in our Mardikian Estate Vineyard.

Jim Pratt began developing this vineyard in the late 1990's, on a site south of Graton and west of Sebastopol on the far western portion of the Sonoma Coast in an area known as the Sebastopol Hills.  The slightly sloping hillside receives the classic morning fog and warm afternoons common to the coastal region, producing fruit with great acidity.

Gap’s Crown Vineyard is situated directly east of and overlooks the Sangiacomo Vineyard on Roberts Road near Cotati at an elevation of 300-800 feet above sea level. This is an extremely rocky, well-draining site with northwestern exposure, which consistently produces powerful, concentrated Pinot noir and Chardonnay in a New World-style. Its proximity to the Petaluma Gap, from which its name is derived, effectively moderates temperature during warm spells in the summer and fall and enables the crop to hang into late September and October in most vintages.

Planted in 2008 to a careful selection of 8 clones and 2 rootstocks chosen to offer a distinct level of flavor and complexity and intrigue.  Steep slopes of well drained, fine samdy loam are often shrouded in a maritime blanket of fog that begins to burn off just about noon, which allows for extended hang time and builds in extra complexity to the wines.

Located in what is deemed “the gateway to the Sonoma Coast,” the Sangiacomo
Lakeville Vineyards were planted by the Sangiacomo family in 1990 during the rebirth of
the Petaluma Gap region. Wind and fog cover the vineyards in the early morning and late
afternoon hours, which allows for extra hangtime and helps build complexity of flavor in
the grapes. This environment combined with the Sangiacomo family’s passion and
appreciation for the land, help to produce some of the most premium Pinot Noir grapes
of the region.

In its seventh year (and fourth vintage) we find the vineyard offering fruit from all eight blocks planted, with a resulting step up stylistically, offering a richer, more complex wine worthy of contemplation. The character of Mardikian is still being revealed as the insights we gain from spending more time farming this treasured vineyard leads to all that Jim Pratt, Sander Scheer and I hoped when we first dusted our boots with these soils.
