2014 Vagon Blanc Chardonnay

Sonoma Coast

I set the target high for this one, setting out to emulate a white Burgundy like expression of Chardonnay, drawing on four favorite handselected barrels from two memorable vineyards. Give the man a cigar, they said, and I took them up on the idea, using larger cigar shaped barrels from Ermitage to achieve a lighter oak influence with a kiss of acidity. This Petaluma Gap/Russian River mashup hits the mark, with a decided old world outlook balanced with a little new world sass.

For those lucky enough to try our first vintage in 2013, the response was universal: this is what California’s version of Grand Cru chardonnay should taste like. A trio of barrels from the famed Gap’s Crown vineyard in the Petaluma Hill region was married with a trio of barrels from the Russian River, sourced from Pratt Vine Hill. Larger cigar-shaped barrels lightened the influence of oak while providing more lees contact, with a creaminess that comes from weekly stirring until secondary fermentation began. There’s a toasty nuttiness with hints of sea salt caramel, married with mellow (not sweet) pineapple and lemon meringue. An extended journey in barrel allowed for added complexity. Old World, New World, Any World, this is a chardonnay to savor.

Choosing three barrels each from two vineyards:

* Gaps Crown Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap of the Sonoma Coast
* Vine Hill Vineyard owned/farmed by Jim Pratt in the Russian River Valley

Winemaking:

  • Grapes were hand-picked and hand-sorted in the field and at the winery
  • 100% whole cluster pressed straight to barrel
  • 100% barrel fermented (yeasts are blend of native, CL2, CH9 & CY3079
  • 100% malolactic fermentation
  • Battonage once weekly through primary fermentation
  • Three barrels from Gap's Crown, Three barrels from Vine Hill
  • Aged sur lie for 17 months in 15% new French oak
  • New French oak Cooper: Damy
  • Bottled 100% unfined and unfiltered in December 9, 2015

Production: 6 barrels only

Clones: Mt. Eden | Robert Young | Dijon 76 | Dijon 96

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
~ 93 Points, "Outstanding" / “Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Lovely aromas of golden apple, pear and buttery brioche. Ripely flavored notes of yellow stone fruits, yellow apple, pear, lemon and honey are enticing as is the slightly viscous, seductive texture and the clean and focused finish. The fruit is the star in this wine that deftly integrates a restrained use of oak.” - Rusty Gaffney, PinotFile
Awards
~ 93 Points, "Outstanding" / “Lush and elegant with rich texture and toasty oak notes; deep, smooth and balanced, long and stylish.” - Anthony Dias Blue, Tasting Panel
Vineyard Notes
~ 90 Points, "Very Highly Recommended" / “Medium-light golden yellow; attractive, floral, honeyed, baked apple, white peach, and mandarin orange aroma with a note of toasty oak; medium-full body; forward, fleshy, slightly creamy, citrus and green apple flavors with tropical notes and zesty acidity; lingering aftertaste.” - Nicholas Ponomareff, California Grapevine
Production Notes
~ 90 Points, "Without Flaws" / “Keyed on crisp apples with a deft trim of oak lending a nice hint of creamy sweetness to its clean and composed varietal nose, this bottling steps up and shows more depth, range and reach once in the mouth with vital, well-defined Chardonnay flavors of fine concentration and length. It is fairly full-bodied and firmed by integral acidity but it is neither tangy nor tart, and it has the build to not only hold up well with age but to improve with an extra year or two on the cork.” - Charles Olken, Connoisseur's Guide
