In its sixth year (and third vintage) we find the vineyard offering fruit from all eight blocks planted, with a resulting step up stylistically, offering a richer, more complex wine worthy of contemplation. The character of Mardikian is still being revealed as the insights we gain from spending more time farming this treasured vineyard leads to all that Jim Pratt, Sander Scheer and I hoped when we first dusted our boots with these soils.

The Dutton family is one of the founding farming families of Sonoma County, dating back to the 1880s, when Warren Dutton first farmed prunes, later farming apples and other fruits before planting wine grapes in the mid 1960’s. The MacPhail Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir is sourced from two of the family’s younger sustainably farmed vineyards.

Most everyone knows that Jim Pratt is a grower we truly admire, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that when the opportunity for a little Chardonnay from Vine Hill presented itself, it was a run, don’t walk situation. On the edge of Green Valley near Forestville in the Laguna Hills region, legendary vintner neighbors all around this vineyard are just one clue that something very special is happening here.

Located at the foot of Sonoma Mountain in the Petaluma Gap, the grapes grow on flat to gently sloping land of gravelly clay loam. The climate is cool, and yields are small. From a total of 40 acres of Pinot Noir planted in 2000, James selects the Dijon 115 and Pommard clones. Owner Michael Sangiacomo, a third generation grape farmer, says that “James picks from good blocks of grapes. The 115 clone gives the wine structure, depth and concentration while the Pommard is visceral with fruit forward character."

This is classic Green Valley, fragrant and begging for attention. The small, 8.6 acre vineyard is just northwest of Sundawg Ridge, sloping gently east to west with well drained Goldridge sandy loam soil, benefitting from the spring-fed lake that inspired the vineyard name.

In its fifth year (and second vintage) we find the vineyard offering fruit from two additional blocks (of eight planted), increasing the number of clonal selections in this vintage to six, with a resulting step up stylistically, offering a richer, more complex wine worthy of considered contemplation. The character of Mardikian is still being revealed as the insights we gain from spending more time farming this treasured vineyard leads to all that Jim Pratt, Sander Scheer and our team hoped when we first dusted our boots with these soils.
