Each of these wines is an expression of the vineyard from whence it came, crafted by nature, and nurtured by our hands through minimal intervention in in our cellar.

I set the target high for this one, setting out to emulate a white Burgundy like expression of Chardonnay, drawing on four favorite handselected barrels from two memorable vineyards. Give the man a cigar, they said, and I took them up on the idea, using larger cigar shaped barrels from Ermitage to achieve a lighter oak influence with a kiss of acidity. This Petaluma Gap/Russian River mashup hits the mark, with a decided old world outlook balanced with a little new world sass.

Let’s be honest: it’s hard to find a tiny vineyard planted to just one clone that makes any real sense any more. But each year, from the two acres at Wightman House, the tinniest of berries on mighty big clusters shows off the Martini clone like nothing else. Overall, I’m finding our 2013s to be more approachable than previous vintages, and that’s especially true here. Very aromatic, showing bright cherry and raspberry balanced with floral notes, hints of rose petal leading the way.

In the mid 1990s Nancy Winn and Chuck Kensler retired and moved from Palo Alto to bucolic western Sonoma County, among old Apple orchards and Chestnut groves, just 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean. They met Jim Pratt and took a community college winegrowing class from him, deciding to grow grapes on the sloping hill of their Green Valley home, named after the sun refractions that cause a beautiful light display (although we’ve also heard that Sundawg was Chuck’s nickname in his surfing days). Planted exclusively to Pinot Noir in 2000, the vineyard sits above the morning fog line and is just reaching its prime, producing distinctive fruit that lingers on the vine and develops great depth of flavor.

Warm is the first word I think of with Toulouse, and for lots of reasons. In this vintage, warm earth shouts from my glass. And, of course, I have nothing but warm feelings for my long time grower Vern Boltz. Warm brings to mind approachable, and this vintage surely is.
