2014 Pratt Vineyard, Vine Hill Road Chardonnay

Russian River Valley

Most everyone knows that Jim Pratt is a grower we truly admire, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that when the opportunity for a little Chardonnay from Vine Hill presented itself, it was a run, don’t walk situation. On the edge of Green Valley near Forestville in the Laguna Hills region, legendary vintner neighbors all around this vineyard are just one clue that something very special is happening here.

Well drained sandy Goldridge soil with wonderful natural acidity and low pH set the stage for Chardonnay with aromas of white peach and lemon curd, citrus blossoms and gardenias and for the romantic, white rose petal. Bright, lively acid with oak that hides a bit, subtle but insistent. Flavors of white peach and not so puckery grapefruit are framed in a medium-bodied wine that is flat out refreshing. The ABC crowd meets its match here, she’s a head turner.

Winemaking:

  • Grapes were hand picked and hand sorted in the field and at the winery
  • 100% whole cluster pressed straight to barrel
  • 100% barrel fermented w/VL2, CH9 & CY3079 yeasts
  • 100% malolactic fermentation
  • Battonage once weekly through primary fermentation
  • Aged sur lie for 17 months in French Oak, 27% new
  • Principal Coopers: Damy, Marcel Cadet & Orion Neptune
  • Bottled 100% unfined and unfiltered on Decepmber 9, 2015

Clones: Mt. Eden, Robert Young, and Dijon 96

Production: 11 barrels produced (248 cases)

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
~ 94 Pts, "Extraordinary" / “Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Bright aromas of peeled apple, peach and acid driven steeliness. Fully ripened flavors of peach, pear and apple are brought to a vibrant high with a lively acid backbone. Very clean and balanced, with a cleansing finish. So easy to drink, you could easily polish off a bottle before you realize it.” - Rusty Gaffney, PinotFile
Ratings
~94 Pts / “The 2014 Pratt Vineyard Vine Hill Road Chardonnay was barrel fermented in 20% new French oak, employing 100% malolactic. It offers lovely tropical fruits, orange blossoms and ginger aromas with a core of pineapple paste and butterscotch. Medium to full-bodied with great richness, opulence and a beautiful satiny texture, it finishes with great freshness and persistence with a notable touch of cedar. Only 251 cases were made.” - Robert Parker
